Will robots take light manufacturing operator jobs?

Threat timeline: The direction of travel is still later than the headlines, but this cycle the factory moved. If The Information is right, Tesla is building several hundred Optimus robots a week, roughly ten times its Q2 pace, and aims for 1,000-plus a week by year end. Those robots are going to Tesla's own testing, training and data collection, not to customers, and sources told the outlet they cannot reliably do a wide range of tasks. Tesla's own external-sales window remains as early as the second half of 2027, and the reported commercial route is leasing to factory operators. For automotive assembly, parts handling and light manufacturing workers, the robot you actually meet on the line over the next 1-3 years is still far more likely to be a Figure, an Apollo or a Digit than an Optimus. Over 3-5 years, the number that would change this assessment is a disclosed count of Optimus units doing paid work for a customer that is not Tesla. A weekly build rate is a manufacturing fact, not a labour-market fact. The $20,000-class price anchor keeps pressuring every competitor whether or not Tesla ships on time.

Threat timeline: The threat did not retreat, it changed machines. 1-2 years for automotive assembly and parts-handling tasks where the BMW playbook can be copied, now with Figure 03 as the carrier. 2-4 years for broader light-industrial deployment. Figure has retired the Figure 02, but the work it proved out is already being handed to its successor.
