Will robots take warehouse order picker jobs?
Yes — it has already started. LostJobs.AI tracks 2 commercially available robots targeting warehouse order picker jobs: Exotec Skypod (Next Gen) and Hikrobot LMR (Latent Mobile Robot). 2 of them are shipping today. Built by Exotec and Hikrobot (Hangzhou Hikrobot Co., Ltd.). Data last verified October 11, 2026.
The robots, one by one
Threat timeline: 1-3 years: goods-to-person systems take the walking out of order picking. The picker who covers kilometers of aisle per shift is replaced by a station worker who scans, grabs and packs, and the headcount per unit shipped falls. 3-5 years: the Next Gen design adds a robot-to-robot picking station, which is a step toward removing the station worker as well; the human role then shrinks to exceptions and replenishment. Retail replenishment is the quieter exposure, since Decathlon and Carrefour use the same system to pick for stores. The pace depends on capex: these are multi-million dollar installations, so the work disappears site by site as new buildings open, not across the whole industry at once.
Threat timeline: Already operating in e-commerce and 3PL warehouses. 1-3 years for shelf-to-person picking roles in sites that can add a robot fleet to existing racking. 3-5 years for the tote and returns handling around it. Mixed-case and pallet work depends on the forklift and carton variants, which are separate products.
