How it actually works
The Astronaut is a single-box system: one robot serves a group of 50 to 70 cows. There are no fixed milking times. A cow walks into the box when she wants — usually drawn by feed — a laser-guided arm finds and cleans the teats, attaches the cups, and milks her while recording yield, conductivity, and dozens of other data points per quarter. She leaves; the next one enters. It runs 24 hours a day with no one there.
The 2026 refresh is about scale, not the single machine. The A5 Next tightens the arm and sensing; the Astronaut Max lets one control room supervise up to 18 robots on a 500-to-1,100-cow farm; and the Lely Hub coordinates a whole barn of robots. Together they move automatic milking off the small family farm and onto the large commercial dairy, which is where most of the cows — and most of the remaining milking jobs — actually are.
