Deployment status

When this hits the labor market

Why the mine is the proof
Open-pit mining is the ideal setting for driverless operation, and that’s exactly why it went first: private roads, fixed haul routes, no pedestrians, no oncoming traffic, and an operator who does the same loop for a twelve-hour shift. Once the truck can run that loop safely, it can run it continuously — no shift change, no fatigue break, no absenteeism — and the economics against a three-shift human crew are decisive.
The result is a domain where “autonomous replaces the driver” isn’t a forecast; it’s an operating fact with a decade of tonnage behind it. Komatsu isn’t the only player — Caterpillar runs a comparable program — but the 1,000-truck milestone makes FrontRunner the clearest single data point for the trajectory.
Why we track it
For most of this catalog, the honest answer to “has it taken jobs yet” is “not at scale.” Mining haulage is the exception.
