When this hits the labor market

Exhibition and museum guide roles are being displaced now — guided tours are the product MagicLab already sells as a package. Inspection, scanning, and material-handling jobs inside electronics plants get repeatable data from MagicLab's own pilots within 1-3 years; spread to ordinary contract manufacturers depends on whether the 400-unit production target lands, which we put at 3-5 years. The 7.5 kg single-arm payload keeps heavy stations out of scope for now.

The factory footage matters more than the gala

Most people met MagicBot Gen1 when it waved to a national audience at the opening of the 2026 Spring Festival Gala. The footage worth studying is older. In December 2024, MagicLab published video of several Gen1 units running an electronics factory line together — inspecting products, moving material, doing precision assembly, scanning barcodes — and called it China’s first multi-robot-collaboration humanoid deployment. A gala wave is marketing. A shift on a production line, even a supervised one, is evidence.

The hardware is a full-size platform: 174 cm, about 70 kg, 42 active degrees of freedom. Single-arm payload is 7.5 kg with a 40 kg whole-body static load, peak joint torque above 350 N·m, and a 1.35 kWh battery rated for three to five hours — long for this generation of humanoids. Perception stacks a 3D LiDAR with two depth cameras and three fisheyes, backed by 100 TOPS of onboard compute.

The Dreame playbook: own the actuator

MagicLab was founded in January 2024 as a spinoff backed by Dreame, the robot-vacuum maker, and it shows. Actuators, dexterous hands, and joint modules are all built in-house — the joint modules are sold separately as components on the company’s own site. A ¥150 million angel round closed in December 2024, led by Dreame’s venture arm, and the stated plan is 400 units produced in 2025 across a thousand application scenarios. A 2026 strategic partnership with JD.com adds a retail-scale distribution channel, which almost no humanoid maker outside China has.

There is no public price; Gen1 sells on negotiated enterprise contracts. But the company priced its smaller Z1 at ¥178,000 retail, and the same supply-chain logic — drive cost down, win on volume — almost certainly shapes Gen1 pricing too.

Why we care for LostJobs

Gen1’s exposure comes in two layers. The near layer is guided-tour work: corporate showrooms, science museums, scenic sites. Scripted, controlled environments, and MagicLab already sells the package — displacement there is underway. The far layer is light factory work: inspection, scanning, material handling, simple assembly. The footage proves capability; what it doesn’t prove is yield, cycle time, or maintenance cost at scale, and no third party has published those numbers yet.
