Deployment status
Pre-orders opened May 2024; sequential deliveries began October 2024, making RB-Y1 one of the first dual-arm mobile manipulators you could simply order. Known buyers are research institutions — MIT, UC Berkeley, University of Washington, and Georgia Tech all run units. No production-line deployment at scale yet. When this hits the labor market
3-5 years. RB-Y1 is a development platform, not a finished worker — today's buyers are labs, not factories. The variable is Samsung: once the consolidated manufacturing and distribution muscle engages, light-assembly and machine-tending applications built on this platform can scale faster than any independent startup's path. The wheeled base skips bipedal locomotion's hardest problems, which may pull deployment earlier, not later.

The dual-arm platform Samsung bought outright
Most humanoid announcements are launch videos. The RB-Y1 is an order form. Rainbow Robotics opened pre-orders in May 2024 — $80,000 for the research version, $120,000 commercial — and started shipping that October. If you ran a robotics lab and had the budget, you could just buy one. Many did: MIT, UC Berkeley, the University of Washington, and Georgia Tech all have units on the floor.
The machine itself skips the sci-fi silhouette. It stands 140 cm and weighs 131 kg: a wheeled base, a single 6-DOF “leg” that raises and lowers the torso, and two 7-DOF arms rated at 3 kg each, for 24 degrees of freedom in total. Top speed is 1.5 m/s on a 1,270 Wh battery. No legs, no face. The bet is that embodied-AI researchers need a standard bimanual platform more than they need another backflipping biped — and that whoever owns the standard platform owns the ecosystem that grows on it.
The corporate structure is the part worth remembering. Rainbow Robotics is a KAIST spin-off whose earlier robot, HUBO, won the 2015 DARPA Robotics Challenge. In late 2024 Samsung Electronics pushed its stake to roughly 35% and consolidated the company as a subsidiary. A top-tier global manufacturer doesn’t consolidate a robot maker to write research papers.
Shipping, yes — but to labs
Be clear about what “shipping” means here. RB-Y1’s role in 2026 is the standard hardware that manipulation researchers train on, the same role Unitree’s G1 plays on the bipedal side: become the default platform first, let the models catch up second. No industry is using RB-Y1 to replace a worker today, and the “commercial version” label shouldn’t fool anyone into thinking otherwise.
Why we care for LostJobs
Platform robots deliver their threat on a delay. The model learning to fold laundry in a Berkeley lab this year is the software that ships inside a production machine three to five years from now. What makes RB-Y1 different from the other lab platforms is the balance sheet behind it: when the platform matures, Samsung’s supply chain and distribution are already in place — no startup scaling required. And the wheeled base, dismissed by humanoid purists, is a shortcut in any facility with flat floors, which is to say most warehouses and factories. If your job is light assembly, picking, or machine tending, this machine can’t touch you yet. It’s the first link in the chain that eventually can.
