Who's exposed

Jobs in the threat radius

  • interventional pulmonologist
  • CT-guided lung biopsy radiologist
  • thoracic surgeon (diagnostic lung biopsy)

Deployment status

Shipping. Intuitive reported 1,096 Ion systems installed as of June 30, 2026, up 21% from 905 a year earlier, with Ion procedures up about 36% year over year in the same quarter (Q2 2026 earnings release). Secondary coverage puts that quarter at roughly 48,000 procedures, over 400,000 cumulative, and availability in 12 countries outside the U.S.; Intuitive's own product page still shows an older 100,000-plus biopsy figure, so we cite the earnings-based numbers. A 2023 BTIG estimate had Ion at about twice Johnson & Johnson's Monarch in installed systems.

When this hits the labor market

Not a job-replacement story on a 1-3 year horizon: the robot extends what a pulmonologist can reach, it does not operate alone. Over 3-7 years the exposure is to the workflow, meaning fewer lung nodules routed to CT-guided needle biopsy or surgical biopsy, and more of the diagnostic volume concentrating in bronchoscopy suites that own a platform. We could not source a displacement figure and are not offering one.

The surgical robot nobody pictures

When people say surgical robot they mean da Vinci. Ion is the other Intuitive machine, and it is the one growing faster. It does not cut anything. A thin catheter goes down the airway under the surgeon’s control, a shape sensor reports where the tip is hundreds of times per second, and the operator steers toward a small nodule that older bronchoscopes could not reach. A needle takes the sample.

Intuitive’s own page says the catheter reaches all 18 lung segments. The catheter measures 3.5 mm, per Medtech Dive’s coverage of the system’s 2022 imaging clearance; the FDA first cleared Ion in 2019.

The unit math

Intuitive’s Q2 2026 release counts 1,096 Ion systems in the field, against 905 a year earlier. Procedures grew about 36% over the same quarter. Nasdaq’s write-up of the quarter puts the procedure count near 48,000 and the cumulative total above 400,000. We have not seen those two figures in a filing, so treat them as reported rather than confirmed.

Context helps. The da Vinci fleet is 11,710 systems, roughly ten times Ion’s. But in mid-2023 Ion stood at 376 systems, so the base has nearly tripled in three years. Its rival is Johnson & Johnson’s Monarch, and BTIG estimated in 2023 that Ion had about twice as many systems in use. Intuitive is the incumbent here too.

Who should pay attention

The exposed roles are narrow and highly paid, which is why we list them. Interventional pulmonologists are not being replaced; the robot is a skill multiplier that makes reaching a peripheral nodule less dependent on individual touch. The pressure lands on the adjacent routes to the same diagnosis. CT-guided needle biopsy, done by radiologists, and surgical lung biopsy, done by thoracic surgeons, compete with Ion for the same small nodules. As lung-cancer screening finds more of them, the question is which room they get sent to.

We found no price Intuitive will put on paper, so we leave it blank. Hospitals buy this through capital contracts, and the real number is per procedure.

The LostJobs take

Ion is the clearest example in our catalog of a robot that reshapes a specialty without removing anyone. Watch the installed base. If the line keeps growing 20% a year, bronchoscopy skill will increasingly mean skill on a robot, and training pipelines will follow the machines. If your work is diagnostic sampling in the chest, learn the platform your hospital is buying.
