September AI Jobs Report: AI Slipped to Fourth on the Layoff Reasons List, and the Cut Lists Started With Managers
Of 52,881 announced layoffs in August, Challenger tagged 3,462 to AI, down from first place for five straight months to fourth. Uber, Jaguar Land Rover and BMW all went after management first, and Salesforce priced its software by outcome instead of by head.
Abstract
The line to write down from September is that the reason column went quiet. Challenger counted 52,881 announced layoffs in August, up 58% on July, and only 3,462 of them were tagged to AI. After five straight months at number one, AI fell to fourth. It did not leave the layoffs. It left the box employers fill in.
The lists were drawn differently, too. Uber cut 3,300 jobs and started with reporting chains more than seven layers below the CEO. Jaguar Land Rover named managers as the risk group. BMW put a 20% management cut and agentic AI in the same announcement. PayPal’s first named WARN list had 251 people, over 95% of them engineers, directors and senior managers, not customer service. On the vendor side, Salesforce priced a bundle at $550 against the $1,300 a US sales rep spends on point tools, and stopped charging by the head. Oracle grew revenue 30% with about 21,000 fewer employees than a year earlier.
Three lines run through all of it: how the coordination layer is being flattened, how entry-level work is turning into products with price tags, and why growth no longer has to pass through people. This issue takes them apart in 9 September signals, 3 structural judgments, 3 kinds of counter-evidence and 5 things to watch in October.
One of those dates is October 2. The BLS jobs report will show whether finance, already flagged by both ADP and JOLTS, and professional services, flagged by ADP, turn up in a third source the same week.
