For all the money poured into humanoid robots, the part that has quietly held the whole project back is the least glamorous: the hands. A robot can walk, balance, and carry a tote across a warehouse and still be useless the moment the job requires picking up a screw off the floor or threading a cable into a socket. On July 9, 1X — the OpenAI-backed maker of the NEO home robot — unveiled a new hand that it calls its biggest hardware update since launch, and the specs suggest the dexterity bottleneck just got a lot narrower.
What’s actually new
The headline number is 25 degrees of freedom, all of them actuated — 22 joints across the fingers and palm plus three at the wrist, every one of them driven rather than along for the ride. That matters because most robot hands cheat: they power a few joints and let the rest flop or lock. A fully actuated hand can shape itself around an object the way yours does.
The clever bit is that 1X built the hand tendon-driven — high-torque-density motors pulling flexible polymer tendons, the same basic idea as the muscles and tendons in your forearm. Crucially, 1X says every joint is simultaneously a motor and a sensor: push on a finger and it gives, and it reports exactly how hard you pushed. Add high-resolution tactile sensing across the fingertips, and you get a hand that can feel contact instead of blindly crushing whatever it grabs — the difference between a machine that can hold an egg and one that can only hold a brick.
The strength numbers are there too. Peak torque reaches 3.5 Nm at the thumb, the wrist delivers nearly 18 Nm, and the fingers can push with up to 45 newtons — enough, per Interesting Engineering, to lift a 20-pound kettlebell — while still landing at ±0.2 mm positioning accuracy. Strong enough to carry, precise enough to pick a screw off the floor. In demos the hand plucks grapes off the stem, installs a light bulb, and picks up a dropped screw. It is also IP68 waterproof and food-safe, which 1X illustrates with the faintly absurd flex of NEO washing its own hands.
The number that should worry workers isn’t a spec
The specification that matters most for the labour question isn’t torque or degrees of freedom. It’s this: production has already begun on a dedicated line built to turn out up to 10,000 hands this year, with motors, tendons, electronics, sensors, and the soft polymer skin all made in-house. Dexterity is no longer a lab curiosity 1X is showing off; it’s something the company is tooling up to mass-produce.
That’s the shift. For years the honest reason humanoids stayed penned inside choreographed factory tasks was that their hands couldn’t handle the messy, small-object, feel-your-way work that fills most actual jobs — the sorting, assembling, folding, plugging-in, and picking that no one automated because grippers were too clumsy. A hand with force feedback in every knuckle and a 10,000-unit-a-year production line is aimed squarely at that gap. NEO already has more than 10,000 home pre-orders and deliveries promised by year-end, so the first real test of these hands won’t be a warehouse — it’ll be someone’s kitchen.
Read it as a capability unlock, not a delivery date
The usual caveat applies, and it’s a real one: a hand that picks a grape in a controlled demo is not the same as a hand that reliably does a full shift of varied manual work unsupervised, and robotics companies have a long history of selling the demo years before the reliability shows up. Millions of test cycles and wrist joints proven past two million cycles under load are encouraging, but they are 1X’s own numbers, and the gap between “installs a light bulb on stage” and “does it in a stranger’s house, every time” is exactly where these products tend to stall.
Still, the direction is the story. Locomotion was mostly solved a while ago; hands were the wall. When the hardest remaining piece of manual dexterity starts rolling off a production line by the thousands, the jobs that survived automation precisely because they needed human hands should notice. That was the moat. It’s being tooled for mass production now.
