Will robots take agricultural aircraft pilot (crop duster) jobs?

Yes — it has already started. LostJobs.AI tracks 2 commercially available robots targeting agricultural aircraft pilot (crop duster) jobs: Agras T70P and XAG P150 Max. 2 of them are shipping today. Built by DJI Agriculture and Guangzhou XAG Co., Ltd.. Data last verified August 17, 2026.

Threat timeline: This one is not a forecast. In China, Southeast Asia and Brazil the substitution has already happened. Field reporting from Shandong puts the arithmetic at roughly 140 person-hours replaced by about 2.5 machine-hours plus one operator — near 50 to 1. Where the timeline still matters is regulation, not capability. The EU's Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive still bans aerial spraying in principle; the Council only adopted its negotiating position on easing drone application on 27 May 2026, it is not yet law, and member states would get 30 months to implement. The US imposes a double gate: Part 107 plus a Part 137 agricultural aircraft operator certificate plus a Section 44807 approval for anything over 55 lb, and on top of that a December 2025 bar on new foreign-drone equipment authorizations. For a spray applicator in Iowa or Bavaria, what decides the next two to four years is statute, not the machine.

Threat timeline: For manual knapsack spraying, the substitution is finished, not pending. Agricultural drones are 30 to 60 times more efficient than hand spraying, and rural China's actual constraint is that farms 'cannot recruit field workers under 50' — in many places the job emptied out before the machine arrived. China's national plant-protection drone fleet stood at 251,000 units in 2024, treating 2.67 billion mu-times a year, up 25%; the global spray-drone fleet passed 700,000 units by June 30, 2026. What deserves attention over the next three to five years is what happens to the NEW job, and it is the most important thing on this page. The licensed drone operator was, briefly, a good job: it requires a CAAC license covering aviation regulation, flight principles and meteorology; China had 194,400 valid licenses at the end of 2023; strong operators cleared RMB 300,000 a year and RMB 10,000+ months were routine in the spring planting season; XAG alone had trained 700,000+ operators and 7,000+ certified instructors by June 2026. Then service rates fell from RMB 10+ per mu to 5.5, to 4.5, to as low as 3.5. More decisively, as one-operator-two-aircraft and map-free flight lowered the skill floor, the ratio of professional operators to farmers operating their own machines moved from 9:1 to 5:5. The machine eliminated the sprayer, created the pilot, and then turned the pilot into low-rate piece work before handing the controls to the farmer. That last step is the part of the automation story almost nobody tells.
