Deployment status

Built in October 2022 at Amazon's Boston robotics facility, first deployed at the Nashville fulfillment center, and now running in 25 US fulfillment centers. It sits downstream of Cardinal, a robotic arm that loads packages into carts; Proteus then hauls those carts from the outbound dock area to the loading dock. Within Amazon's own fleet Proteus is not the volume machine — Amazon announced its millionth robot in July 2025 across 300+ facilities, and the bulk of that number is Hercules and Titan drive units that carry inventory pods. When this hits the labor market

1-3 years: at sites already running Proteus, the pushing, lifting and long-distance walking that made up the outbound-dock transport shift is gone. What was removed is a task, not a job title — Amazon has never published how much labor that task consumed, saying only that employees move to higher-skilled work like inventory flow and quality control. 3-5 years: the next-generation Proteus expands from the dock to the whole building and into delivery stations, at which point the thing being replaced is not one route but all point-to-point material transport inside a facility. The magnitude comes from internal documents obtained by the New York Times in October 2025: Amazon's automation team expects to avoid hiring more than 160,000 US warehouse workers it would otherwise need by 2027, and more than 600,000 by 2033, saving roughly 30 cents per item shipped. Amazon said those documents were incomplete and did not represent its overall hiring strategy. The distinction matters and we will keep making it: these are hires avoided, not layoffs. Amazon employed 1,556,000 people at the end of 2024 and roughly 1,576,000 at the end of 2025, so headcount is still rising. Amazon also maintains the opposite claim — that next-generation sites with advanced robotics require 30% MORE employees in reliability, maintenance and engineering. Both can be true. The moving work is disappearing and the fixing work is appearing, but the second needs far fewer people and a much higher bar to enter.

One million robots, and this is the one allowed out of the cage

In July 2025 Amazon delivered its millionth robot, to a fulfillment center in Japan, across a network of more than 300 facilities. That number is a dividing line for this catalog: every other entry here, added together, does not approach what one company has deployed. Amazon’s own description — the world’s largest manufacturer and operator of mobile robotics — is not really contestable.

But most of that million are Hercules and Titan drive units, which lift inventory pods and stay inside cages that only authorized robotics specialists may enter, navigating by barcode stickers on the floor. Proteus is the exception. It is 7.8 inches tall, lifts close to 900 pounds, builds its own map with SLAM, and chirps when something is in front of it. Its job is to move package-filled carts — up to roughly 400 kg each — from the outbound area to the loading dock. Two shifts of about ten hours, with a fifteen-minute charge every couple of hours.

What got deleted is a task, not a job title

Amazon describes the displaced work precisely: employees push carts, lift heavy items, and cover long distances during a shift. That sentence describes a task. Amazon has never published how many people worked the outbound dock, or what share of their hours went into moving carts. So a claim that Proteus eliminated the dock associate role would be an inference, not a fact anyone can check, and we are not going to make it.

What we can check sits at both ends of the argument. Amazon’s side: next-generation sites with advanced robotics require 30% more employees in reliability, maintenance and engineering roles, and its Shreveport, Louisiana facility runs 3 million square feet with 2,500 employees at full ramp while cutting processing times up to 25%. The other side: internal projections obtained by the New York Times in October 2025, in which the automation team targets 75% of all operations, avoids 160,000 US warehouse hires by 2027 and more than 600,000 by 2033, and books 30 cents of savings per item. Amazon called those documents incomplete.

Why this entry leads the catalog

Because Amazon is the only company here that treats warehouse automation as internal engineering rather than as a product. You cannot buy Proteus. There is no price, no distributor, no quote to request at a trade show. That is exactly what makes it the one to watch: a single firm is simultaneously the largest builder of these machines, the largest operator of them, and one of the largest warehouse employers in the United States. It has no customer to convince.

The schedule is already public. The next-generation Proteus is in lab testing now, arrives in Europe in the first half of 2027, and stops being a dock robot — Amazon’s language is that it will work “anywhere items need to be moved,” delivery stations included, taking instructions in ordinary speech instead of through a programming interface. Scott Dresser, who runs Amazon Robotics, puts it as: you tell it what needs to be done, and it works out the priority, the route and the timing.

For a warehouse worker the read is simple. If a large share of your shift is moving things from point A to point B inside a building, the open question is not whether the task gets automated but which wave your site is in. The job that genuinely grows on the other side is mechatronics technician — stripping Proteus down every thirteen weeks, cleaning lenses, running diagnostics, swapping parts. It is real, and it pays better. There are just far fewer of them than there were people pushing carts.
