For a couple of years the honest criticism of Chinese humanoid robots was that they were very good at backflips and press events and not much else — spectacle over labour. That criticism is starting to expire. The numbers coming off actual factory and logistics floors in China are no longer demo numbers. They are shift numbers, and they are getting close enough to human output to matter.
The night shift that got 9x better
The clearest example comes from a Shenzhen logistics centre, where three humanoid robots have been working night shifts for six months. When they started, they sorted about 100 parcels an hour against a human worker’s 500 to 600 — slow, error-prone, and unable to handle large packages. That is roughly where every skeptic expected the story to stop.
It didn’t. The operator assigned dedicated data collectors to record how humans handle different packages, then redesigned the sorting stations themselves — adding sloped surfaces so the robots had to turn and bend less. Six months in, throughput had climbed from 100 to 900 parcels an hour, about 85% of a human sorter. Reported by Pandaily, the robots are now described, without irony, as the centre’s “star employees.”
The two levers there are worth separating. Part of the gain is the robot getting smarter. But a big part is the workplace getting reshaped around the robot — the sloped chutes, the choreographed stations. That is exactly how factory automation has always advanced: you don’t just drop a machine into a human job, you rebuild the job so the machine can win at it. The 85% figure is a joint achievement of the hardware and the redesign, and the redesign scales across sites in a way a one-off clever robot does not.
Not just sorting
It isn’t confined to warehouses. In a Nanchang tablet-manufacturing workshop, eight humanoid robots have been deployed as quality inspectors, each running an inspection cycle in about 20 seconds with precision controlled to within two millimetres. Inspection is a telling target — it’s repetitive, it’s judgment-adjacent, and it’s the kind of role that historically kept a lot of people employed on a line precisely because full automation was too brittle.
The deployments are also multiplying at the network level. Robotera has put humanoids into more than ten logistics centres operated by China Post and SF Express, according to the same reporting, again hitting up to 85% of human efficiency. When a robot maker is quoting a consistent 85% across multiple real customers, that is a different kind of claim than a single lab result.
Why 85% is the number to watch
Eighty-five percent of a human, at first glance, sounds like the robot still loses. On a single day-shift task, it does. But the economics of a night shift are not the economics of a day shift. Night work is where staffing is hardest to fill, turnover is highest, and premiums are paid. A machine that runs at 85% of a human’s rate but does it at 2 a.m., every night, without a shift differential, without callouts, and without the thing eventually breaking that a 24/7 human schedule breaks — that machine doesn’t need to beat a person on peak throughput to be the cheaper option. It needs to be close, and it’s close.
This is the part of China’s humanoid push that the policy headlines undersell. The government’s stated target — get 10,000 humanoids into real “work mode” by the end of 2026, per the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology — is easy to read as ambition on a slide. The Shenzhen and Nanchang numbers are what the target looks like when it stops being a slide. A robot that sorts 900 parcels an hour on the graveyard shift is not a demo. It’s a coworker who just filled the seat nobody wanted, and the humans who used to fill it should be reading these throughput charts carefully.
