Xinhua published a profile on May 3, 2026 of Peng Zhihui — co-founder of AGIBOT and former Huawei 「Genius Youth」 — confirming he is one of 29 individuals who received the 2026 China Youth May Fourth Medal, China's highest youth honor. The award itself was announced April 27. The Xinhua profile dropping the day before May Fourth makes the political message explicit: humanoid-robot founders are now a state-canonized youth role model, on the same medal list as a polar researcher, a fighter pilot, and a critical-care doctor.

In early May 2026, Tesla rolled the last Model S and Model X off the Fremont assembly line — ending a 14-year and 11-year run respectively. The same line is being torn down and reinstalled as the first-generation Optimus production line, targeted at one million humanoid robots a year. The retool window is four months. The Optimus V3 reveal lands in late July. The car factory that built California's electric-vehicle myth is now the robot factory.

On May 1, Meta acquired Assured Robot Intelligence — the foundation-model humanoid startup founded by NYU's Lerrel Pinto and UCSD's Xiaolong Wang — into Superintelligence Labs. Per Bloomberg, Meta wants to be the Android of the humanoid market. The same May 1, the May 20 layoff calendar invite landed in 8,000 Meta inboxes. The capex line gets the people; the headcount line loses them.

State Grid Corp. of China just issued the single largest procurement order in the history of embodied robotics: 6.8 billion yuan ($994.7M) for 8,500 units in 2026. The mix is 5,000 quadrupeds, 500 humanoids, and 3,000 dual-arm wheeled manipulators — split among Unitree, Deep Robotics, AgiBot, UBTECH, and Fourier Intelligence, all five of which are pre-IPO. The first ten-billion-yuan vertical market for physical AI is the Chinese power grid, and the buyer is the state.

On April 30 the OpenAI-backed Norwegian humanoid maker 1X cut the ribbon on a 58,000-square-foot factory in Hayward, California — motors, batteries, transmissions, soft-goods, and sensors all built in-house under one roof. Year-one capacity 10,000 NEO units. Target 100,000+ by end of 2027. First-year production already sold out within five days of October 2025 preorders. The American humanoid industry now has its first volume manufacturing line, and the first one targets the home, not the factory.

On April 29 the FT floated SoftBank's plan for a vertical-stack robotics company called Roze AI. By April 30 it was confirmed in U.S. press: bundle ABB Robotics ($5.4B), Ampere ($6.5B), and DigitalBridge ($3B), point the robots at U.S. data-center construction, then list at $100B in 2026 H2.

Figure CEO Brett Adcock posted on Threads on April 23 that Figure shipped roughly 60 robots in February, 120 in March, and 240 in April 2026 — a clean three-month doubling. Combined April production exceeds the entire 2025 annual total of ~150. The bottleneck is shifting from manufacturing to deployment. Customers can't install humanoids as fast as Figure can build them.

On April 28 at Honda's Wako Building, IEEE dedicated its formal Milestone plaque to the 1996 Honda P2 — the first self-contained autonomous bipedal humanoid. Only ~293 IEEE Milestones exist worldwide. The plaque arrived 30 years late, and exactly the week the field stopped being about whether robots could walk and started being about whether the customer could install them.

On April 28 Apptronik dropped five executive hires from Waymo, Boston Dynamics, Amazon, iRobot, and Paramount+ — and quietly teased a new humanoid that is not Apollo. The CPO is the man who shipped Waymo's autonomous ride-hail. The SVP of Services is the man who took Spot from R&D to fleet revenue. Read together, the package is the operational scaffolding for fleets, not prototypes.

On April 28 NVIDIA released Isaac GR00T N1.7 — an open, Apache-2.0, commercially licensable Vision-Language-Action model trained on 20,854 hours of human egocentric video. It ships with the first published scaling law for dexterous manipulation: going from 1k to 20k hours of human GoPro footage more than doubles task completion. Validated on Unitree G1, AGIBot Genie 1, and the YAM bimanual rig. Three different humanoids, one downloadable brain, no per-seat license.

On April 27, JAL Grand Service and GMO AI & Robotics Trading announced Japan's first airport humanoid pilot. Two China-made wheeled humanoids will load baggage and shift unit-load devices at Haneda starting in May. The phased plan runs through 2028. The job category being pre-disrupted — airport ground handler — has been one of the most stable, unionized, blue-collar jobs in postwar Japan.

On April 27, Caixin reported that Beijing-based Robot Era closed a fresh round of more than $200M, taking total funding past $346M and pushing valuation well clear of the $1.5B post-money it set in March. The signal isn't the dollar figure — it's the customer roster. SF Express, China's largest courier, is already running embodied-AI customs inspection with Robot Era hardware on cross-border cargo lanes.
