Tesla launched Cybercab in Austin on September 3: two seats, no steering wheel, no pedals, no physical way for anyone inside to take over. Texas's automated-vehicle registry hit 420 cars statewide the same day, while Tesla's own July disclosures showed paid robotaxi miles going in reverse, not up.

The Nevada Transportation Authority approved three robotaxi permits unanimously on August 20, opening Clark County to as many as 8,000 driverless vehicles over 12 months. Tesla's own Cybercab chief engineer told the hearing that 5,000 has always been a ceiling and 2,500 would satisfy him.

Tesla's Q2 call confirmed Optimus production is still zero, the first units go to data collection not customers, and Musk called it the hardest thing Tesla has ever built to scale.

Tesla plans to start Optimus V3 production at Fremont in late July on the former Model S/X line, with Musk warning early output will be slow and hard to forecast.

Six months ago, Optimus dropped the water bottles on a Miami stage. Five weeks before the Fremont robot line starts up, it can hand them to a person without dropping them. The trajectory is the product.
