How AI Is Reshaping Work

Three independent layoff trackers crossed the 100,000-tech-jobs-cut mark within hours of each other on Monday April 27. That is roughly 858 layoffs per day for 117 days. AI was named as the driver in 47.9% of Q1 cuts — up from 8% a year ago. The line was crossed quietly because the pace stopped being remarkable.

On April 27, Marc Benioff posted that Salesforce is hiring 1,000 new grads and interns 「right now to ride the AI exponential」 — explicitly framed as a counter-narrative to the entry-level-jobs apocalypse. Two months earlier, the same company quietly cut roughly 1,000 employees. The math netted to zero on purpose.

On April 24, Sundar Pichai told Cloud Next 2026 that 75% of new code at Google is now AI-generated and engineer-approved — up from 50% last fall. Three hours later, Bloomberg's editorial board ran a piece arguing the AI job apocalypse is being delayed. Both can be true. Only one ships to production.

On April 25, IANS reported that the combined headcount of TCS, Infosys, HCLTech, Wipro and Tech Mahindra fell by 7,389 in FY26 — versus a net add of 12,718 last year. The offshore-coding pipeline that was supposed to absorb US tech displacement is itself contracting.

Dan Schulman told staff to use AI to draft their own obituaries and predicted 20–30% unemployment within five years. On April 24, Bloomberg's editorial board politely told him to relax.

KPMG is cutting roughly 10% of its US audit partners — about 100 of 1,400 — after a voluntary retirement push fell short. Big Four partner-for-life ended on a Thursday in April.

Nike's second round of 2026 cuts hits 1,400 — mostly technology roles — while consolidating engineering into two hubs: Beaverton and the Nike India Technology Center. The map matters more than the headcount.

Microsoft announced a first-in-its-history voluntary retirement program on April 23 — roughly 8,750 U.S. employees eligible, age-plus-tenure ≥ 70. The $37.5B quarterly AI capex line is the same line the savings are going to.

A Harvard working paper covering 62 million U.S. workers across 285,000 firms finds that at companies adopting generative AI, junior hiring drops 7.7% within six quarters — driven not by layoffs but by a silent freeze on new positions. Axios reran the numbers on April 21.

Reuters reported on April 21 that Meta is installing the Model Capability Initiative on US-employee laptops — capturing mouse movements, clicks, keystrokes, and occasional screen snapshots — to train workplace AI agents. The 8,000-person layoff is scheduled for May 20. The rhyme is not subtle.
